Chase
Brook Park is another example of "undevelopment" which
tranformed an eyesore into an attractive public
park. In 1999 the
Town of Yarmouth purchased the former Rascal's
nightclub site on the south side of Route 28 in
West Yarmouth
where Chase Brook flows into Mill Creek. The Land
Bank Committee took the lead in developing this
property into a park and a Federal HUD grant paid
for construction
of handicapped accessible facilities. The Land Bank
Committee partnered with the Route 28 Task Force
and the Yarmouth Conservation
Trust (YCT) to raise funds to landscape the site. More
than $40,000 in cash and in-kind services were
contributed by more than
500 donors. YCT collected the funds and disbursed
them as construction progressed.
The
park, which was dedicated June 22, 2002, now includes
a paved parking lot, picnic tables and benches,
extensive plantings and a walkway that leads to
a viewing platform
overlooking the Mill Creek
estuary with Lewis Bay
in the distance. Visitors can also observe an active
Osprey nesting platform in the marsh as they enjoy
a quiet respite from busy Route 28.
